How to use Base Coat and Top Coat for your gel manicure
Using these products correctly is key to a durable manicure. Each layer needs to be cured under a UV lamp or LED lamp to set properly and bond with the other layers.
- Prepare your nails: Push back your cuticles, shape your nails with a file and gently buff the nail surface to remove shine. Wipe away any dust.
- Apply the gel base coat: Apply a thin, even layer of Base Coat to the clean nail. Be careful not to touch your cuticles. Cure the layer in your UV lamp or LED lamp.
- Add your Gel Polish colour: Apply your favourite Gel Polish colour in thin layers, curing each layer in the lamp.
- Seal with gel top coat: Apply a layer of Top Coat over the colour to protect it and seal the free edge. Cure this final layer under the lamp.
What does a base coat do for gel nails?
A gel base coat acts as a double-sided adhesive layer. It bonds tightly to your natural nail plate and provides a sticky surface for your Gel Polish colour to cling to. It also helps to prevent staining on your natural nails and smooths out minor unevenness on the nail surface.
What is the purpose of a gel top coat?
A gel top coat is the final protective layer of your manicure. It seals in your colour, prevents chipping and scratches, and determines the final finish of your nails. It keeps your manicure looking fresh and neat for up to 3 weeks.
What is a no-wipe top coat?
A no wipe top coat is a Top Coat that cures completely dry without leaving a sticky residue. Traditional top coats leave a sticky layer after curing that you must wipe away with a cleanser. With a no-wipe formula, your nails are completely finished and dry as soon as they come out of the lamp.
How does a matte top coat work?
A matte top coat transforms any glossy Gel Polish into a smooth, velvet-like finish. It contains micro-particles that diffuse light instead of reflecting it. You apply it just like a regular Top Coat, cure it in your lamp, and it instantly removes the high shine for a modern matte look.
What are glitter and flake top coats?
A glitter top coat or flake top coat contains small shimmering particles or metallic flakes suspended in a clear gel formula. This lets you add a subtle shimmer or a bold glitter effect to any colour without having to apply separate nail art products. It is an easy way to give your favourite colours a fresh look.
Do you need a UV or LED lamp to cure Base Coat and Top Coat?
Yes, all gel-based products, including our gel base coat and various top coats, require a UV lamp or LED lamp to cure and harden. They will not air-dry like other types of nail products. You cure each layer for 60 seconds in an LED lamp to ensure proper adhesion and durability.
How many layers of Base Coat and Top Coat should you apply?
You should apply 1 thin layer of Base Coat and 1 layer of Top Coat. Applying these products in layers that are too thick can prevent them from curing properly and may cause your Gel Polish to peel or lift. Always seal the free edge of your nail with both products to protect against chipping.
